Professor Lutz's current primary research interests are focused on the ecology of deep-sea hydrothermal vents throughout the world's oceans. Of particular interest has been documentation of biological and geological succession in these hydrothermal systems. As part of an NSF-funded initiative, his is producing, in conjunction with commercial filmmakers, an IMAX-format film tentatively entitled "Volcanoes of the Abyss".
