William FitzGerald specializes in rhetorical studies with particular interests in stylistics, speech acts, and the rhetoric of religion. In writing studies, his interests include composition pedagogy, professional communication, and writing program design. He has published on the rhetorical theory of Kenneth Burke. His book project, ongoing, is Speakable Reverence: A Rhetoric of Prayer.
